TOLEDO – Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo will expand into Washington Local Schools in fall 2024 with the opening of a location at Hiawatha Elementary School. The new Club will be the organization’s first in Washington Local. “Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo is dedicated to serving our local youth and offering quality after-school and summer programming and opportunities for our students to learn and grow,” said James Ravas, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo. “We are grateful for the opportunity to establish a strong partnership with Washington Local Schools and to expand our outreach to serve kids and save lives in Toledo.” Outgoing Washington Local Superintendent Kadee Anstadt, Ed.D., joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo board of trustees in 2023. The Clubs also worked with Hiawatha principal Bert Bernhardt on the logistics of opening the new site. “We are elated that our students will have a safe place to experience fun, after-school programming, receive healthy snacks and dinner, as well as academic support. This is such an incredible gift to our community and we look forward to growing this partnership,” Anstadt said. The Hiawatha Club is expected to open in September and will serve members from age 7 through sixth grade. PARENT TO STAFF SHOUT: "I would like to shoutout Hiawatha’s Mrs. Fellers. She is an amazing teacher! She not only is present inside the classroom but also outside of the classroom supporting her students in any sports or extra curricular activities. She doesn’t miss a beat and is always thinking of new and exciting things to make sure the kids have fun. Any question I’ve ever had, was answered immediately, she’s great at communicating and reminding of important dates. She is so patient, kind, and caring. She advocates for her little kids, and it shows. If it wasn’t for her constant support for my son, hard work in creating new ways to help him learn, and include him, I’m certain we wouldn’t have made it! It takes a special person to be a teacher, and behind every child who believes in themselves, there is a teacher who believed in them first- and that is Mrs. Fellers." WOW! What a rave review about our awesome Ms. Fellers!

STAFF SHOUT: "I want to shout out all the aides at Whitmer because they do such an amazing job everyday and I think they all should know how important they are. They are all always willing to jump in and help each other out and step in where needed. They are reliable and willing to help with any task without hesitation! Knowing I have a team of people who support me truly makes my job so much easier. The aides in this building are astounding. And I believe they ALL should be recognized for all their dedication and hard work. Their presence and commitment makes a difference in the school. They go above and beyond for all students. They are all amazing people to work with and having such great coworkers makes the job so much easier. " We are so blessed by our aides!

STAFF SHOUT: "Kelly Lopez is an extraordinary teacher! Kelly not only teaches her 5th graders with care and compassion, but she also takes on 1/2 of the head teacher responsibilities. Through the years Mrs. Lopez has led the student council and the guards for Hiawatha. Thank you for taking on these extra activities that make students love their school experience! You rock Mrs. Lopez!" Hiawatha would not be the same without her leadership and love! Thank you, Ms. L!

PARENT TO STAFF SHOUT: "I want to give a shout out to Mr Bernhardt, principal of Hiawatha. As a parent volunteer, I have seen Mr Bernhardt wear so many different hats. From principal, to tutor, to teacher, to mentoring, and to being such a good sport for all the kids. He continuously goes above and beyond for Hiawatha and the entire community. We are so lucky to have him at our little school and WLS is blessed to have him as such an amazing role model to these kids. He never loses patience and always shows grace, no matter the adversity." Mr. B is never afraid to be silly for students and is always kind in his approach! We are lucky to have him!

PARENT SHOUT: "Coach Stefanie Dellaflora is an amazing person and a great addition to Whitmer high school and the wrestling world. She goes above and beyond for the wrestlers and students at the school. She truly cares about everyone and has done so much to help my child and others, even with things outside of school. I hope she knows the impact she has on everyone. I want to thank her for always being here and being someone the kids can trust and for pushing them to be the best they can be, most importantly for believing in them! Thank you for recognizing and pointing out when they do something right, when they make improvements, and for celebrating with them when they achieve something, even when it's something small. Thank you for putting so much of your time and energy into helping shape our children and making sure they stay on track. Your dedication and love for them does not go unnoticed. Washington Local is lucky to have her!" What impactful words from the ones most impacted. Way to go Coach Stefanie!

"Mr. John at Shoreland is always looking for fun to be had - with students or staff! In this picture, he can be seen playing Simon Says with all of our bussers at the end of each day. They absolutely love him and giggle at his goofy antics. We so appreciate Mr. John stepping in to help and reminding us that a day is never wasted that includes laughter." FUN should be a part of every day and Mr. John gets it!

STAFF SHOUT: "I never knew how to give a hug until I met Tracy Gladieux. She holds on tight and makes you feel that, for that moment, nothing else matters. That is true friendship and kindness. Students at Hiawatha line up to see Mrs. Gladieux in the morning to start their day. Tracy remembers so many names and makes every student that comes to see her feels special. It's a pleasure to call her a friend and colleague!" Those are some LUCKY students and staff to have someone so kind and connective in their daily lives!

STAFF SHOUT: "What doesn't Will Weaver do? He saves so many of us DAILY, just with technology alone. He has to patiently work with frazzled and stressed teachers, calming their days magically just by a few clicks. He rarely doesn't have an answer and if he doesn't at the moment, he'll find one. We are so incredibly grateful for him - day in and day out!" Our tech crew might be 'behind-the-scenes,' but their work is VERY front-and-center! We are so grateful for the work of Will and the tech team!

STAFF SHOUTOUT: "Chelsea DePompei is an incredible teacher, a wonderful coworker, and one of the most organized people you will ever meet. She is compassionate and caring, and builds fantastic connections with her students. Chelsea takes great pride in the organization of her classroom, and teaches these skills to her students. Chelsea has been teaching third grade at Hiawatha for 5 years, and I've been lucky to have been a classroom aide twice. She runs a very well-rounded classroom, and the students love her. Chelsea is smart, beautiful, caring, and a great teacher. She truly deserves a staff shoutout." What a gift Ms. D is to her students and to WLS!

PARENT TO STAFF SHOUTOUT: "We would like to shoutout Mr. David Lenz! Last year, he stood by Christian on the field as his track coach and this year transitioned to the role of his honors Geometry teacher. Mr. Lenz sees the potential in each of his students and isn't afraid to be honest with them. Today, at the Whitmer track meet, his presence was felt once again as he cheered on Christian and the team with unwavering enthusiasm. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a phenomenal teacher and coach! Thank you, Mr. Lenz, for all that you do. Your passion, guidance, and support mean the world to us!"
