Alternative Education for Washington Local Schools' Whitmer High School

Curriculum

  • Students are assigned to one of our three-hour school sessions: 7:30-10:30 or 11:30-2:25

  • This allows more time for jobs, family responsibilities, and independent work to speed progress toward graduation

Ed Options On-Line Courses

  • Most credits completed Ed Options
  • Each student assigned specific courses needed
  • Students work at own pace
  • Pre-test eliminates concepts already mastered
  • Everything needed is in Ed Options lessons
  • Substantial standards-based content requiring writing
  • Include four core areas as well as electives
  • Students work independently
  • Teachers provide help as needed
  • Students may also work outside of school
  • Ed Options available 24/7 via Internet
  • Every hour worked outside of class brings graduation an hour closer

Service Learning

  • Focuses on decision-making and life choices
  • Teacher-moderated group discussions and activities bi-weekly
  • Provides specific ways to build a positive future despite hurts and setbacks of the past
  • Students learn they're not alone in their life challenges and support one another
  • Contributes toward an elective credit
  • Students and staff give back to the community through service projects one session bi-weekly
  • In serving we gain a greater sense of our own worth
  • Projects range from community agencies serving the poor or elderly, to yard work for WLS schools and residents, to the Metroparks
  • Service and reflection contribute toward an elective credit

Career Exploration

College and Career Counseling

  • Students explore their aptitudes, skills and interests
  • Students learn about potential matches
  • Students develop a solid resume and cover letter
  • Staff assists with filling out applications
  • Students practice with mock interviews
  • Staff networks with local employers to refer students when there are openings
  • Counselor works with each student to develop a post-high school plan for studies and career
  • Students receive assistance with college application and financial aid process
  • Counselor identifies students qualifying for free education at local colleges
  • Students learn about academic support resources at local colleges to ensure success
